Nature-based claims
I spend quite some time on land that is managed for intense agricultural production. My first encounter with the global demand
for agro-commodities was in secondary logged-over forest in Malaysian Borneo. After timber extraction the land was converted to palm oil
plantations. This experience influenced my perception of how we value and transform ecosystems, such as tropical lowland dipterocarp rainforest.
Over twenty years of engagement to preserve tropical forests, I observed a societal shift in product marketing emphasizing "palm-oil free" and plant-based ingredients.
Nowadays, claims for beneficial measures need to comply. Claims that cannot be proven by evidence may backfire, harm reputation, or result in financial losses.
